AppaStats
by Robert A. Lapp, ApHC Director

"AppaStats" is designed to serve the ApHC membership by providing timely and accurate information regarding two of the most important measures of the "health and welfare" of the ApHC--registrations and memberships.  From time to time,
AppaStats will also include additional data related to the Appaloosa breeding industry.

Year-End 2000 Data

ApHC Memberships: The record-setting trend that began in January of 2000 culminated with membership reaching an all-time high of 32,716 members for Year-2000.  By comparison, the ApHC enrolled 26,170 members in 1992, 30,006
in 1995, and 30,368 in 1998.

Top 15 Membership States

1.  Texas                      6.  Pennsylvania                   11.  Ohio
2.  California                 7.  Missouri                         12.  Illinois
3.  Washington             8.  North Carolina                  13.  Oklahoma
4.  Florida                     9.  Colorado                          14.  Indiana
5.  Michigan                10.  Minnesota                        15.  Oregon

Note: Memberships in the above states were compared to 1997, 1998 and 1999. With the exception of Washington, all states reflected membership increases for each year. Washington's total for 2000 was slightly lower than 1997 but higher
than 1998 and 1999.

ApHC Registrations:

The ApHC registered 10,906 horses in 2000.
With the exception of 1997 when 11,030 were registered, Year-2000's total was higher than each year since 1988!  December registrations alone, again excepting 1997, were the highest December totals for each year since 1990. (Monthly data has been tracked only back to 1990 so far). Of those 10,906 registrations, 6,099 or 55.9% were weanlings, and 1,180 or 10.8% were 3 yr. olds or older.

Top 15 Registration States:

1.  Texas                          6.  Oklahoma                   11.  Illinois
2.  Minnesota                    7.  Michigan                     12.  Idaho
3.  Missouri                      7.  Pennsylvania (tie)         13.  Colorado
4.  California                      9.  Florida                        14.  Iowa
5.  Washington                10.  Oregon                        14.  Wisconsin  (tie)

Mares on Stallion Reports:

Stallion reports are due November 30 of each breeding year but many are late- filed. The total number of mares on stallion reports for each year is the best indicator of both breeding and future registration trends.  As of December
31, 2000, mares on stallion reports filed for breeding year 2000 were running slightly  ahead of the same time frame for breeding year 1999.

Year-2000 Registrations: Select State Analysis:

Approximately 35 states registered more Appaloosas in 2000 than in 1999. In nearly all the remaining states, any declines were slight, often within 2  to 10 registrations.  Further analysis of data from select states produced the following noteworthy historical comparisons: (note: state data is available only from 1986 to current)

Minnesota:  highest number of registrations for any year since 1986
Nebraska:  highest since 1988
Arizona: with the exception of 1997, highest since 1988
Colorado: highest since 1994
Florida: with exception of 1997, highest since 1988
Ohio:  highest since 1987
South Dakota: down very slightly from 1999 but otherwise highest since 1986
Missouri: excepting 1997, highest since 1990
Maine: highest since 1992
Michigan: excepting 1997, highest since 1991
Kentucky: down slightly from 1999, but otherwise highest since 1986
Illinois:  highest since 1996
Nevada: excepting 1997, highest since 1990
South Carolina: highest since 1990
Tennessee:  highest since 1995
West Virginia: highest since 1987
Wisconsin: down slightly from 1999, otherwise highest since 1986
Wyoming:  highest since 1988

Canada: continuing the trend from earlier months, year-end Canadian totals are far and away the highest since at least 1986.  (Next month's AppaStats will examine Foreign registrations more completely)
